Oracle JRockit Sets World Record SPECpower_ssj2008 Benchmark Result and Beats All Previously Published Results
Oracle's JRockit on PRIMERGY servers from Fujitsu Siemens Computers Outperforms Competition with SPECpower_ssj2008 and Select SPECjbb2005 Benchmark Results
Redwood Shores, CA, March 16, 2009 -- Today, Oracle announced that Oracle® JRockit Java Virtual Machine (JVM) on PRIMERGY servers from Fujitsu Siemens Computers achieved world record performance on two industry benchmarks, the SPECpower_ssj2008 and the SPECjbb2005.
The world-record SPECpower_ssj2008 result, achieved with Oracle JRockit on a PRIMERGY server from Fujitsu Siemens Computers with an Intel® Xeon® processor,(1) outperformed all previous SPECpower_ssj2008 results,(2) showcasing that Oracle provides the leading energy-efficient, high-performance platform for Java.
The SPECpower_ssj2008 benchmark measures both server-side Java-based application performance and power. The SPECjbb2005 benchmark is an industry-standard measurement of server-side Java-based application performance.
Oracle JRockit combines technology from Oracle Fusion Middleware and BEA Systems and illustrates the rapid progress that Oracle is making in combining industry-leading technologies from the two companies into a unified product offering.
The Oracle JRockit family of products, a key component of Oracle Fusion Middleware, combines leading technology from Oracle and BEA to provide a comprehensive portfolio of Java runtime solutions that includes the industry’s fastest solution for standard Java.(3) Oracle JRockit is a high performance Java Virtual Machine developed to help ensure reliability, scalability, manageability and flexibility for Java applications. Oracle JRockit enables a new level of performance for Java applications at significantly lower costs to the enterprise.
World-Record Results on SPECpower_ssj2008
Setting the new world-record SPECpower_ssj2008 benchmark result and demonstrating superior performance per watt, Oracle JRockit on a PRIMERGY TX150 S6 server from Fujitsu Siemens Computers with one quad-core Intel Xeon L3360 2.83 GHz processor running Microsoft Windows 2008 achieved a Performance to Power ratio of 1,273 overall ssj_ops/watt.
SPECpower_ssj2008 (Java Server Benchmark), developed by the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation, the first industry-standard benchmark that measures power consumption in relation to performance for server-class computers. SPECpower_ssj2008 reports power consumption for servers at different performance levels — from 100-percent to idle in 10-percent segments — over a set period of time. The graduated workload recognizes the fact that processing loads and power consumption on servers vary substantially over the course of days or weeks. To compute a power-performance metric across all levels, measured transaction throughputs for each segment are added together, then divided by the sum of the average power consumed for each segment. The result is a figure of merit called “overall ssj_ops/watt.”
Outperforms Competition in SPECjbb2005 Results
Setting a new SPECjbb2005 benchmark record for single-socket systems,(4) Oracle JRockit delivered 211,144 SPECjbb2005 bops/JVM, running on a PRIMERGY RX100 S5 server from Fujitsu Siemens Computers with a quad-core Intel Xeon X3380 3.16 GHz processor, 8 GB RAM and Microsoft Windows 2008.(5)
In a second test configuration, Oracle JRockit delivered 368,034 SPECjbb2005 bops/JVM, running on a PRIMERGY RX200 S4 server from Fujitsu Siemens Computers with two quad-core Intel Xeon X5470 3.33 GHz processors, 16 GB RAM and Microsoft Windows 2008.(6) This result delivered nearly seven percent more performance than a near identical configuration with IBM’s Java Virtual Machine(7) and set a new world record for dual-socket Intel Xeon systems.
SPECjbb2005 (Java Server Benchmark) developed by the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation, is a benchmark for evaluating the performance of server side Java. SPECjbb2005 evaluates the performance of server side Java by emulating a three-tier client/server system (with emphasis on the middle tier). The benchmark exercises the implementations of the JVM (Java Virtual Machine), JIT (Just-In-Time) compiler, garbage collection, threads and some aspects of the operating system. It also measures the performance of CPUs, caches, memory hierarchy and the scalability of shared memory processors (SMPs).
